Formation of dyke

Dyke is a kind of intrusion in rocks.

Hot magma pushed its way across rock layers. Later, magma cooled down and solidified, forming a column of rock which was different to the rock type on both sides.

The dyke shown in the photo is made up of dolerite. Dolerite is in dark colour because it was formed by basic magma. The dyke cuts across granite which is formed by acid magma.
